Counselling, what
is it?
Counselling is a process that focuses on
enhancing your psychological well-being, so that you are then able
to reach your full potential. To this end the counsellor
facilitates your personal growth, development, and
self-understanding, which in turn empowers you to adopt more
constructive life practices.
Counselling offers people the opportunity
to increase their self awareness and therefore begin the journey of
bringing positive change in to their lives. Counselling is a
partnership between the counsellor and the
client.
What can
counselling be used for?
Counselling may be helpful in a number of
ways. It can enable you to develop a clearer understanding of your
concerns and help you acquire new skills to better manage personal
and educational issues. The counsellor can offer a different
perspective and help you think of creative solutions to problems.
Sharing your thoughts and feelings with someone not personally
involved in your life can be most helpful.
People often seek counselling because they
are feeling unhappy or dissatisfied with one or several aspects of
their life. They may be feeling anger, frustration, apathy or hurt
about some issues that are taking place in their life. Many people
may feel that it has become too difficult to work through it on
their own, they need some clarity, someone to listen to them who is
neutral and removed from the issues. Many people utilise
counselling to: increase in self confidence; improved health and
well being; better relationships; greater sense of balance between
work and personal life and ability to make decisions and resolve
conflicts.
How many sessions
will I need?
Thinkshift offers brief, short, medium or
long term support depending on the specific issues you are
experiencing. Change doesn't happen quickly for most of us. The
length of treatment, the number of sessions, depends on a number of
variables. Variables include: the severity of the problem, the
motivation of the client, the type of problem and the age of the
client. The more focused and limited the problem being addressed,
the shorter treatment can be. The more the treatment addresses
healing emotional injuries, the longer it is likely to take. In
your first session Andrew ill discuss the reasons for seeking
counselling and the outcomes you are seeking. Andrew will then
within reason make an assessment of the number of sessions that may
be required to address the issues.
Your first
consultation
Your initial consultation of 60 minutes,
will start with your completion of an intake form to gather high
level personal information such as: the circumstances surrounding
the areas you wish to address, establishing priorities and goals.
This information will be enable us to experience your world and
therefore more easily act with genuineness, so that the session is
conducted in the most effective manner for you. Then we will make a
sound start towards achieving your desired
objectives.
Confidentiality
Your counsellor treats all the information
you share as confidential material. All professional counsellors
who are members of a recognised professional association are
involved in case consultations and supervision for the purposes of
best practice. These meetings involve discussion of clients
concerns with the aim of formulating the best possible assessment
and intervention plan. Where possible, the identifying personal
