Dr.
Alicia Tye-Smith
Osteopath
Dr. Alicia Tye-Smith was led to study osteopathy through her own
sporting experiences, having competed at a national level of track
and field for over 10 years. The idea that the body could be
treated as a ‘whole’ through long, detailed consultations, which
included both joint manipulations and soft tissue work, was very
appealing as a competing athlete.
Alicia
has been a past scholarship holder with The Victorian Institute of
Sport and has complemented her osteopathic experiences with 6-years
of sports/remedial massage therapy and
has completed a level one strength and conditioning
course.
Alicia
has also done further studies in the areas of Clinical Pilates, dry
needling, obstetrics and gynecology and pediatrics. She has a
particular interest in treating sports injuries (including junior
athletes) and rehabilitating and writing strength programs for
particular injuries and conditions.
What
is osteopathy?
Osteopathy
is a safe, gentle and effective form of hands-on therapy, which
primarily treats the musculoskeletal (muscles, ligaments, joints)
system of the body. It is one of the oldest forms of modern-day
manipulative manual therapy having started in the U.S.A. over 130
years ago.
Osteopathy
also recognises that when the musculoskeletal system is in correct
alignment the body has an innate ability to repair
itself.
What
do osteopaths treat, diagnose and prevent?·
Sporting
injuries such as strains, sprains, bursitis and tendonitis· Back,
neck, jaw and shoulder pain· Arthritis and joint injuries· Headache
and migraine· Postural and repetitive strain injuries (RSI) · Hip,
knee, ankle and foot pain· Elbow, wrist and hand pain· Asthma &
breathing problems
What
to expect at your initial consultation
Initial
treatments involve a 45 minute visit (and 30minute standard 'follow
ups’) in which a detailed history is obtained and a general screen
is performed of your muscular and skeletal system, including
orthopaedic testing on relevant areas.
A
diagnosis is made and a discussion of the most appropriate
treatment methods and options is provided (which may include
sending you off for x-rays). Hands-on treatment is given, which may
include some of the following techniques such as gentle joint
manipulation, massage, stretching, articulation/mobilisation,
muscle energy and myofascial techniques.
Most
importantly, a management plan is developed with you to provide the
best prevention and rehabilitation for your
injury/condition.
Why
choose St. Kilda Osteopathy?
Our
aim is to not only treat your injured area, but to provide you with
the appropriate knowledge on how to best prevent the
injury/condition from occurring through strengthening, stretching,
postural and nutritional advice.
Long
initial consultations help provide your osteopath with the ability
to assess the injury and also the surrounding areas to determine if
any secondary biomechanical changes have taken place. It is very
important that you understand your condition, as this will also aid
in the fastest path to full recovery.
